Xiamen, ChinaPolyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic known for its excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, dimensional stability, and inherent flame resistance. However, unreinforced PPS can be relatively brittle and may have limited impact strength.
Reinforcing PPS with long carbon fibers helps improve its mechanical strength, stiffness, and structural performance, making it suitable for demanding applications where lightweight construction and long-term reliability are essential.
Enhanced mechanical performance for demanding structural applications.
Suitable for challenging thermal and chemical environments.
Helps reduce component weight compared with many metal alternatives.
Good rigidity and creep resistance for demanding applications.
Electrical conductivity can also be achieved through carbon fiber reinforcement, depending on the formulation.
Long fiber reinforced thermoplastics (LFT) combine a polymer matrix with long reinforcing fibers to enhance mechanical performance. Compared with conventional short-fiber reinforced materials, long fiber composites can offer improved stiffness, impact performance, and structural integrity, depending on fiber length, orientation, fiber content, and part design.
Long carbon fiber reinforced PPS (PPS-LCF) combines the inherent thermal and chemical resistance of the PPS matrix with the high strength and stiffness of long carbon fibers. This combination makes it an attractive material for lightweight structural components operating in demanding environments.
With its combination of high performance and lightweight construction, PPS-LCF is a promising option for demanding engineering applications where conventional plastics may not provide sufficient thermal or mechanical performance.
Please refer to the technical data below for an overview of the material's properties. For grade selection and application evaluation, we recommend confirming the required performance with the corresponding technical data sheet.
Note: Typical properties may vary by grade, fiber content, specimen preparation, and testing method. Please refer to the official TDS for specific values.
PPS-LCF is suitable for high-performance components that require a combination of heat resistance, chemical resistance, high rigidity, and lightweight construction. Potential applications include:
Structural components requiring strength and reduced weight.
Components requiring thermal stability and tailored electrical properties.
Precision mechanical parts for demanding operating conditions.
Selected equipment and fluid-handling components.
It is also suitable for lightweight structural parts requiring high stiffness and thermal stability.

The cost of carbon fiber reinforced composites depends on the matrix resin, carbon fiber content, manufacturing process, and order quantity. High-performance materials such as PPS-LCF generally have a higher material cost than standard engineering plastics. However, their high stiffness, low weight, and thermal and chemical resistance may help reduce component weight, maintenance requirements, or total system costs in suitable applications.
The safety of a composite depends on its resin system, additives, processing conditions, and intended application. Properly manufactured PPS-LCF pellets can be handled according to the supplier's safety data sheet (SDS). During machining, dust and airborne fibers may be generated, so suitable dust extraction and personal protective equipment should be used.
For food-contact, medical, or other regulated applications, specific compliance and biocompatibility requirements must be evaluated separately. Suitability should not be assumed solely from the base resin or reinforcing fiber.
Thermoset composites cure through a chemical reaction that creates a cross-linked structure. Once cured, they cannot be remelted and reshaped like ordinary thermoplastics.
Thermoplastic composites, including PPS-LCF, soften when heated sufficiently and solidify when cooled. Depending on the material and processing history, they may be suitable for remolding or mechanical recycling. Actual recyclability depends on the composite formulation, fiber length retention, contamination, and available recycling processes.
