PPS-LGF
Long fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites can use both general-purpose and high-performance engineering plastics as their resin matrix. LFT-G has been focusing on long fiber reinforced thermoplastics for more than 10 years, developing a wide range of material systems including PP, PA, MXD6, PPA, PC, PBT, TPU, PPS and PEEK.
PPS (Polyphenylene Sulfide) is a high-performance thermoplastic engineering plastic with an excellent combination of properties. It is widely recognized as a specialty engineering material and is sometimes referred to as "plastic gold" because of its outstanding heat resistance, chemical resistance, dimensional stability and electrical performance.
PPS offers excellent high-temperature resistance, chemical and corrosion resistance, flame retardancy, dimensional stability, electrical insulation and mechanical performance. Compared with some other high-performance thermoplastics, PPS also offers relatively good processability and cost efficiency, making it an attractive resin matrix for reinforced composite materials.
Performance
Although PPS offers excellent overall performance, unfilled PPS can have relatively high brittleness and limited impact resistance. Certain PPS grades can also require careful processing conditions. Reinforcement and modification are therefore commonly used to tailor PPS for demanding applications.
By incorporating long glass fiber, the mechanical performance and dimensional stability of PPS can be significantly improved. Depending on the formulation and fiber content, PPS-LGF can provide higher stiffness, strength, impact resistance and heat resistance compared with unreinforced PPS.
PPS-LGF vs. PPS-SGF
Reinforcing fibers form a supporting structure within the resin matrix and help carry external loads. The fibers can also absorb and distribute energy through deformation and other mechanisms, improving the overall mechanical performance of the composite.
As glass fiber content increases, tensile strength and flexural strength generally increase within an appropriate formulation range. Compared with short glass fiber reinforced PPS, PPS-LGF can provide higher tensile strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus because the longer fibers are better retained during processing and provide more effective load transfer.
In the referenced comparison, PPS/LGF composites showed increases of approximately 11.0% in tensile strength, 18.9% in flexural strength and 11.3% in flexural modulus compared with PPS/SGF composites under the tested conditions.
Long glass fiber composites can also provide significantly improved impact performance compared with short glass fiber composites. As fiber content increases, the longer fibers can form a more continuous reinforcing network within the polymer matrix. This structure helps distribute external loads more effectively and can contribute to improved impact resistance and load-bearing performance.
The introduction of glass fiber also improves the heat resistance of the composite. The reinforcing fibers create a structural network within the PPS matrix, helping maintain dimensional and mechanical stability at elevated temperatures.
Another important factor is fiber length retention. Compared with short glass fiber systems, PPS-LGF can retain longer fiber lengths after processing, which contributes to more effective reinforcement and improved mechanical performance.
Overall, PPS-LGF can offer significant performance advantages over conventional PPS-SGF materials, particularly in tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus and impact resistance. Actual performance depends on fiber content, formulation, processing conditions, specimen geometry and testing standards.
