PA12 Long Glass Fiber Reinforced (PA12-LGF)

PA12, also known as Nylon 12 or polyamide 12, is a long-chain aliphatic polyamide and a semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastic. It combines the characteristic mechanical properties of nylon with low moisture absorption, excellent dimensional stability, good chemical resistance, low-temperature toughness, and good processability.

Compared with shorter-chain nylons such as PA6 and PA66, PA12 has a higher proportion of methylene groups in its molecular structure. This contributes to its relatively low moisture absorption, low density, good flexibility, and stable mechanical and electrical properties across changing environmental conditions.

PA12 is widely used in applications where a combination of lightweight construction, dimensional stability, chemical resistance, flexibility, and low-temperature performance is required. Typical applications include automotive fluid lines, pneumatic and air-brake systems, cable protection, industrial tubing, 3D printing, medical components, and various engineering parts.

Long glass fiber reinforcement can further improve the mechanical performance of PA12, particularly stiffness, strength, dimensional stability, and load-bearing capability. This makes PA12-LGF suitable for structural and semi-structural applications where conventional unreinforced PA12 may not provide sufficient rigidity.

Product Details

The molecular structure of PA12 contains a relatively high proportion of non-polar methylene groups. This contributes to its low moisture absorption, flexibility, and good dimensional stability. At the same time, the polar amide groups can form hydrogen bonds between polymer chains, providing PA12 with good mechanical strength and crystallinity.

PA12 offers low water absorption, good low-temperature performance, good air tightness, resistance to many oils and fuels, and good resistance to a range of chemicals. Its combination of flexibility and mechanical performance makes it particularly useful for fluid-handling, tubing, cable, and automotive applications.

Key Properties of PA12

1. Low Density

PA12 has a relatively low density compared with many engineering plastics, typically around 1.01–1.03 g/cm³ for unfilled grades. Its low density can contribute to weight reduction in automotive and industrial applications. When reinforced with glass fiber, the density increases, but the resulting material can provide a favorable balance between weight and mechanical performance.

2. Melting Point

PA12 generally has a melting temperature in the range of approximately 175–180°C, depending on the specific grade and testing method. Its relatively moderate processing temperature makes it suitable for a variety of injection molding and extrusion applications.

3. Low Water Absorption

One of the major advantages of PA12 is its low moisture absorption compared with shorter-chain nylons such as PA6 and PA66. Lower water absorption helps maintain more stable dimensions and mechanical properties in humid environments, making PA12 suitable for applications where dimensional stability is important.

4. Excellent Impact Strength

PA12 has good toughness and impact resistance over a relatively wide temperature range. Its combination of flexibility and toughness makes it suitable for pipes, tubes, protective components, and other parts exposed to mechanical impact or vibration.

5. Low-Temperature Performance

PA12 maintains good toughness at low temperatures and can be used in applications exposed to cold environments. Its low-temperature flexibility is one of the reasons it is widely used in automotive fluid lines, pneumatic systems, and outdoor industrial components.

6. Flexibility

PA12 is naturally more flexible than many other engineering nylons. Its flexibility can be further adjusted through formulation and plasticization when required. This allows PA12 compounds to be tailored for applications requiring different combinations of stiffness, flexibility, and impact resistance.

7. Low Friction and Wear Resistance

PA12 offers good wear resistance, low friction, and inherent self-lubricating characteristics. These properties make it suitable for sliding components, gears, bearings, cable guides, and other parts where reduced friction and wear are required.

8. Fuel and Chemical Resistance

PA12 has good resistance to many oils, fuels, hydrocarbons, and other chemicals. This property is particularly valuable in automotive applications involving fuel systems, fluid lines, pneumatic components, and other parts exposed to aggressive operating environments. Actual resistance depends on the specific chemical, temperature, exposure time, and material grade.

9. Environmental and Weathering Resistance

PA12 provides good resistance to moisture and many environmental conditions. For demanding outdoor applications, UV stabilizers and other weathering additives can be incorporated into the formulation to improve long-term resistance to sunlight and environmental exposure.

10. Electrical Properties

The low moisture absorption of PA12 helps maintain relatively stable electrical and dielectric properties in humid environments. This makes PA12 useful for cable protection, electrical components, insulation systems, and other applications where environmental stability is important.

Applications of PA12

PA12 is one of the most widely used long-chain polyamides. Its combination of low moisture absorption, dimensional stability, chemical resistance, toughness, flexibility, and good processability makes it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.

1. Automotive

PA12 is widely used in automotive fluid and air-management systems, including fuel lines, air-brake lines, pneumatic lines, vacuum lines, coolant lines, and various tubing and connectors. Its combination of chemical resistance, low moisture absorption, flexibility, and dimensional stability makes it an attractive material for automotive lightweighting.
