Carbon Fiber Reinforced Nylon

Carbon fiber reinforced nylon is very different from glass fiber reinforced nylon. Carbon fiber is not resistant to shearing. In screw design, the shearing force must be controlled to ensure fiber length is within the required size range. In the melting zone, nylon must be fully melted, and kneading elements should be appropriately reduced to preserve carbon fiber length for better reinforcement. In twin-screw extrusion, carbon fiber should be well dispersed and maintain a high aspect ratio to maximize reinforcement.

Carbon fiber is a high-performance material, but relatively expensive. Using carbon fiber reinforced nylon improves many properties of nylon, but also increases cost and processing difficulty. Therefore, an economical amount of carbon fiber should be added while meeting design requirements and usage conditions.

Long carbon fiber reinforced PA6 materials are widely used in military equipment. Examples include:

• US MX missile: 40% carbon fiber reinforced nylon replacing aluminum alloy in engine casing.
• Gun barrel: lightweight, less prone to deformation, reduced vibration, longer barrel life.
• Expansion clip: using PA6 LCF, increases capacity by two bullets.
