PA12 (Nylon 12)
PA12, also known as Polyamide 12 or Nylon 12, is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic recognized for its outstanding toughness, chemical resistance, dimensional stability, and low moisture absorption. Due to its balanced mechanical and thermal properties, PA12 is widely used in automotive, industrial manufacturing, oil & gas, electronics, and consumer applications.
What is PA12?
PA12 belongs to the polyamide family and is synthesized through the polymerization of laurolactam monomers. Its molecular structure contains repeating amide groups (-CO-NH-) linked by long carbon chains, providing an excellent combination of strength, flexibility, wear resistance, and thermal stability.
Compared with many other engineering plastics, PA12 offers lower water absorption, superior dimensional stability, excellent impact resistance, and strong chemical resistance. These properties make it ideal for demanding environments requiring long-term reliability.
PA12 is commonly processed through injection molding, extrusion, and additive manufacturing, and is widely used in tubing, automotive components, electrical housings, industrial connectors, and lightweight structural applications.

PA12 vs PA6
Both PA12 and PA6 belong to the polyamide family, but they differ significantly in molecular structure and performance characteristics.
| Property | PA12 | PA6 |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture Absorption | Low | Higher |
| Dimensional Stability | Excellent | Good |
| Chemical Resistance | Excellent | Good |
| Impact Resistance | Higher | Moderate |
| Thermal Resistance | Excellent | Good |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
Overall, PA12 offers better toughness, dimensional stability, and chemical resistance, making it highly suitable for premium engineering applications.
